Description

Hiram Bingham III's book titled "Inca Land: Explorations in the Highlands of Peru" is a notable work that sheds light on his archaeological discoveries and exploration of the ancient Inca civilization in Peru. Hiram Bingham, an American historian and explorer, published this book in 1922, documenting his expeditions in the early 20th century.

Hiram Bingham's journey to Peru began in 1911 when he set out to find the lost city of Vilcabamba, the final refuge of the Incas during the Spanish conquest. Instead, he stumbled upon the awe-inspiring ruins of Machu Picchu, an incredibly well-preserved ancient Inca citadel located high in the Andes Mountains. While Machu Picchu is arguably Bingham’s most well-known adventure, its not his only.

The book "Inca Land" serves as a detailed account of Bingham's expeditions and his experiences in the region. The book describes his encounters with the local people, his adventures through treacherous terrain, and the breathtaking beauty of the Peruvian landscape.

Follow the pages of this well-known book and explore Machu Picchu, ride the legendary Hiram Bingham train and climb Peru’s 20,992ft Coropuna and more.

Coropuna Base Camp

Coropuna is a dormant volcano located in the southern part of Peru and sacred to the Inca. Its summit standing 6,425 meters (21,079) is the third highest mountain in the country. In 1910 archaeologist Adolph Bandelier announced that Coropuna was higher than Aconcagua. In 1911, Annie S. Peck and archaeologist Hiram Bingham traveled to Coropuna to see if this curious affirmation was true. Peck reached the two eastern summits, ca 6,305m and ca 6,234m, while Hiram Bingham climbed to the highest summit, at 6,425m.

Depart Arequipa driving Northwards approximately 280 km. crossing desert areas, descending into an oasis like farmland near the Maja River. The river crossing is at the town of Punta Colorada, which is the lowest altitude we’ll see in the days to come. From here, we’ll begin the ascent to the town of Chuquibamba (2945 m), the last significant town in the area. From here, we’ll travel another two hours before reaching base camp at 5150 m, located at the foot of the volcano.

Coropuna Summit

Coropuna’s Climb is not technically difficult, but it is physically demanding and the altitude plays a key role during the ascent. The acclimatization achieved in the previous days, will be determining for a good attempt.

Start time is around 2:00 AM, but it can be modified according to the team physical capacities and level of acclimatization. Once on the march, the ascent begins almost right away heading up to a the rocky ridge. Reaching the ridge is one of the three steep sections of the climb, having to find the way through a maze of big rocks. Once on the top of the ridge, it get notably easier, ascending up to about 5850 m, where the team will gear up for the glacier crossing. From this point, the guides will find the best way avoiding an icy area by traversing right and then back left to the upper end of the rocky ridge, being this the second steep section. After a good rest, will retake the ascent by a steep slope, the third and last steep section, doing some short switchback until reaching the plateau from where the summit will be visible and it will take about 1 h to cover an almost flat terrain, stand on top of the third highest mountain in the country.

This climb takes around 7 hours, there are few crevasses, but in general terms it is a very safe summit day for such a high mountain. Descend back to base camp will take about 3-4 hours, taking a short break at the high camp to regain strength, continuing down to base camp for a last night in the mountains.
